Donna’s Ginger Christmas Cookies
an old recipe
handed down
flour, butter, ginger, molasses
shaped into:
stars, bears, trees, a camel
hung on the tree to spin in the sparkle
or - eaten round
dough pressed by
the bottom of a glass
crisp medallions with sugar crystal tops
more precious still
stories of
my great-grandmother
a life recipe:
compassion, self-control, courage
honor to God, humble service to others
shaping lives
of those to come
five generations of
spice and sparkle, sweet and strong
I remember The cotton tied around the bottom of the glass pressing into the dough. Small pinches of sticky leftover gingerbread dough quickly consumed. Smelling the rich spices as they cooked in the oven. Thanks for bringing it all back sister.
