Powerless

dainty doe

smudge of brown 

in a green alfalfa sea

back: forest, water, rest, shade, shelter, safety

forward: suburbia, asphalt, cars, dogs, humans, danger

I watch

   see a slender leg lift

   take tentative steps

   towards disaster

powerless to change the outcome,

wisdom demands

I turn away 

   having witnessed

   the death of 

   too many beautiful things

   too many times before
